History of the Branch
A brief historical overview
The Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1951 pursuant to the Act of 30 October 1951 on the Polish Academy of Sciences. Within the organisational structure of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the branches of the Polish Academy of Sciences play an important role in disseminating knowledge and integrating the scientific community of various research institutions. The decision to establish a branch was related to the number of members of the corporation and the activities of the Polish Academy of Sciences’ scientific institutions in a given area. In 1972, the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences adopted a resolution to establish a branch in Poznań. At that time, it was the third branch in Poland. Earlier, branches were established in Kraków (1957) and Wrocław (1970). At that time, there were 29 PAN institutions operating in Poznań and the surrounding area, and 23 PAN members.
Branch offices
The Branch’s first headquarters (1972–1993) was located in the building of the Poznań Society of Friends of Science (PTPN) at 27/29 Seweryna Mielżyńskiego Street. In 1993, the Branch’s offices were moved to the newly built Polish Academy of Sciences Science Centre in Poznań, at 17/19 Henryka Wieniawskiego Street. The Branch moved to its current headquarters in the beautiful Działyński Palace, located at 78 Stary Rynek, in June 2019.
