Międzynarodowe Warsztaty pt. Endangered prehistoric sites in NE Africa and beyond. Threats, protection, and conservation

The Archaeological Commission at the Poznań branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, together with the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the International Commission for Late Prehistory in North-East Africa, organised an international workshop entitled Endangered prehistoric sites in NE Africa and beyond. Threats, protection, and conservation, which took place on 3 February at the Działyński Palace. It was organised in cooperation with the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo.

Meeting Subject

The aim of the meeting was to discuss standards for documenting and protecting human adaptation systems in prehistory as a form of cultural heritage, assessing the destruction of archaeological heritage in Egypt and Sudan as a result of armed conflicts, climate change and the intensification of infrastructure projects, and developing a formula for supporting researchers and students from Sudan who left the country as a result of the war that has been ongoing since spring 2023 and are now residing in Poland. The introductory lecture was given by Dr Nuria Sanz, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo.

On 4 February, Prof. Jerzy Kaczorowski, President of the Poznań Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences, met with Dr Nuria Sanz, Director of the UNESCO Regional Office in Cairo, and Prof. Arkadiusz Marciniak, corresponding member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and Chairman of the Archaeological Committee at the Poznań Branch of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The subject of the conversation was Poland’s cooperation with the Sudanese academic community and the prospects for strengthening this cooperation in the coming months.
